If you want to take a selfie with your ballot this year, you should know that it’s still against the law in New York.
A judge upheld New York’s ban on ballot selfies in September. Several other states have laws that are unclear or do not indicate whether photos with completed ballots should be illegal.
Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos told USA Today that it’s “perfectly legal” to take ballot selfies in his state.
Pop singer Justin Timberlake shared a picture of himself voting in Tennessee last year, which helped draw attention to the issue.
Many people not informed of this also have gotten in trouble, including Katie Moore of Los Angeles. She told USA Today that she was trying “encourage people my age to vote.” She said she thought it was like a digital equivalent of the “I voted” sticker.
A Pace University professor said he agreed with the ban. “I think it’s a good idea and there’s really no need for any cameras unless they are trying to identify someone,” Anthony Manzi said.
