The Jacob Burns Film Center held its fifth annual Halloween movie marathon Oct. 26. The event kicked off at 8:15 p.m. and went until 6:00 a.m.
This year’s lineup included 10 feature films spread out across two screens. A third screen featured frightening shorts. An exciting twist at this year’s event was that the movies highlighted women in film. The lineup included several films directed and written by women, as well as films that featured women in lead roles. The podcast We Hate Movies did a live episode on one of the films. The Janet Peck Gallery held activities throughout the night, including a costume contest. The concession stand was open all night and served free coffee.
Denise Treco, director of Communications and Marketing, attends every year. A few times she has stayed all night.
“I like horror movies, so it is always a lot of fun. It is a good crowd and there is always a lot of energy in the room. It is a fun night and we always do pretty well.”
Sarah Soliman, Marketing Associate at Jacob Burns, did not attend this year but knew the lineup well.
“It is the 35th anniversary of two of Stephen King’s films, Cujo and The Dead Zone. Both films came out in 1983.”
The marathon was founded and hosted by the senior programmer of JBFC, Andrew Jupin. Jupin does all the programming, and starts preparing for this event starting in the summer.
