An event at Pace University last week previewed races on the midterm ballot. The Business Council of Westchester sponsored “Red Wave, Blue Wave,” where local leaders of the two major parties spoke and answered questions from voters.
Candidates for Congress, U.S. Senate, Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller, and the New York State Senate and Assembly are among those on the ballot.
New York State Republican Party Chairman Ed Cox said Republicans will try to pick up a couple of seats in the State Assembly. He predicted Democrats would win a majority in the U.S. House and said Republicans could win at least two more seats in the U.S. Senate.
New York State Democratic Party Executive Director Geoff Berman said his party’s voters are energized that and healthcare and gun control are some of the top issues in the election.
“I felt it was very interesting to be able to hear from our state party chairs and important state legislature leaders,” said Gregory Rivera, a junior political science major. “This is insight you can’t get enough of and is a rare and underappreciated opportunity.” Rivera said he likes learning about politics and became more interested after President Trump was elected in 2016.
Shariff Abukari, a junior finance major, also attended the event. “I thought it was a good deal to have important political leaders speak on our campus about the upcoming elections. This is something we don’t normally see and I wish more students took advantage of it,” said Abukari.
About 40 people attended the event.
