The group Pleasantville Recycles is holding public Q&A sessions about future restrictions on plastic bags in the village. One session took place on Monday, and another one is scheduled for Dec. 3, 7-8:30 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Public Library.
Beginning in January, food retailers and other businesses in Pleasantville will charge 10 cents for single-use plastic and paper bags. Six months later, plastic bags will be banned. Customers are free to bring their own reusable bags when they shop. The changes were approved by the Village Board in July.
Pleasantville Recycles will distribute free tote bags at its Dec. 3 meeting. Other upcoming events by the group include cleaning out the fields at Hilltop Hanover Farm with the help of volunteers on Nov. 23 from 10 a.m. to noon. Last year the team had 60 volunteers and harvested close to 1200 pounds of vegetables, which were donated to various organizations.
Pleasantville Recycles aims to improve and expand recycling in the village. The team meets once a month to discuss, plan events and spread awareness about recycling.
One supporter of the initiative is local restaurant Wood and Fire. Manager Primo Rosales said his restaurant is “extremely conscientious about recycling. There is so much waste that gets thrown away at restaurants and we make sure it goes to the proper place. I receive the newsletter from Pleasantville Recycles and since their mission is local, and we also want to serve our community to the best of its ability, we make sure to use their ideas. I will be at the forum on Dec. 3rd for sure.”
