Two candidates on ballot for Mt. Pleasant Town Justice

The office of Mt. Pleasant Town Justice is one of 11 races on the ballot in Pleasantville in this year’s general election. Current Town Justice Robert J. Ponzini, a Republican who has held the position for 24 years, is facing a challenge from Democrat Elizabeth Smith.

Smith said inspiration to run for Town Justice mainly stemmed from her four sons, who are 10, 8, 5 and 3 years old. She explained how they all have “very different abilities and personalities.”

“Watching my children challenge themselves and their physical and mental boundaries inspired me to challenge myself and pursue my dreams,” she said.

Smith said she hopes to reduce the backlog of cases and involve the community more, especially children and young adults. She said her best moments in the campaign have been hearing voters say that they will or have voted for her.

“Strangers have become friends and volunteers. Meeting new people and listening to their unique stories,” she said. “Connecting with other candidates from Westchester has been incredible. Receiving local, state and national endorsements.”

Smith said the campaign has also had some challenges.

“Trying to do it all – work full-time while maintaining a house, being there for my kids and maintaining my other commitments. Campaigning takes a lot of time,” she said. “I have spent many weekends and evenings doing campaign related activities.”

“Trying to maintain that work-life-campaign balance is difficult,” she added. “I am very fortunate, as my family has been so supportive. My kids have even joined me on the campaign trail!”

Attempts to interview Ponzini, the incumbent, were unsuccessful.
