The Black Cow: local alternative to coffee chains

Finding one’s favorite cup of coffee in Pleasantville is no easy feat. Two Dunkin’ Donuts, a Starbucks, and an additional “Chart-Bucks” (Chartwells Catering Starbucks) on the Pace University campus mean that there are a variety of places to pick up your daily cup of joe.

Pleasantville has got its share of cafes and coffee joints, but fans preach that The Black Cow has the perfect coffee shop experience figured out. The Black Cow’s Pleasantville location has been open since 2011. Its first location in Croton-on-Hudson opened in 1995.

“Black Cow is one of those laid-back and hip environments where no one is rushing,” said Pace University senior Precious Hose. “Their music is pretty awesome, and the baristas are laid-back, unlike Starbucks or Dunkin’, where there is always a rush. Also, I highly suggest their Cow Whip!”

The Black Cow imports coffee beans from Asia, Africa and Central and South America. They also pride themselves on their variety of specialized blends.

“I know Pace students go to Starbucks probably because it is on the same street that the shuttle ends at, but the Black Cow is just on the other side of the train station,” said barista Kym Acosta. “And we have supreme quality coffee.

“My coworkers and I are always down to chat and get to know our customers,” Acosta said. “The Black Cow is a great, cozy, home-like coffee shop that I believe can’t be recreated. It truly represents Pleasantville.”
