{"id":3407,"date":"2024-11-26T13:35:18","date_gmt":"2024-11-26T18:35:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pleasantvillepress.com\/?p=3407"},"modified":"2024-11-26T15:26:32","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T20:26:32","slug":"dangerous-intersection-at-grant-st-poses-safety-risks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/pleasantvillepress.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/26\/dangerous-intersection-at-grant-st-poses-safety-risks\/","title":{"rendered":"Dangerous Intersection at Grant St Poses Safety Risks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Village of Pleasantville generally has a reputation for being safe and pedestrian-friendly, but one intersection poses safety risks to pedestrians and drivers alike.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this fall, the Village of Pleasantville Board of Trustees met with State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Assemblymember MaryJane Shimsky, and state Department of Transportation representatives to address safety concerns at the Grant Street intersection on the Saw Mill River Parkway. Photo by Leanna Ward.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Village Trustee Nicole Asquith described it as a &#8220;tricky intersection.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;There\u2019s a turn when you\u2019re going southbound on the Saw Mill, which makes it a bit of a blind spot right before you hit the intersection, and it\u2019s particularly tricky at night. There is a warning indication before you get there, but there was a serious accident earlier this year, and there have been a number of incidents,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The problem really presents itself when drivers fail to see the light or fail to stop at the light when it turns red.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turns from the parkway onto Grant Street are prohibited, but many drivers make these illegal turns anyway. In March, the village requested that the state place a red light camera at the parkway intersection on Grant Street.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asquith explained that placing a red light camera would require getting state approval. \u201cThe Saw Mill is a state-owned road,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We don\u2019t own it, we can\u2019t change the infrastructure on our own, so everything has to go through the New York State Department of Transportation.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The village has discussed other options for improving safety at the intersection, Asquith said. \u201cSmall things, like having more visibility for the crossing guards,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people have suggested building a pedestrian bridge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe state would have to do it,&#8221; Asquith said. &#8220;It\u2019s very expensive, and there tend to be problems with those kind of infrastructures too.
