Blue Walrus: Pleasantville’s Best-Kept Secret?

Pleasantville residents may know that the village has a Cold Stone Creamery, but not another nearby frozen treat shop: the Blue Walrus. A Blue Walrus employee believes business can be slow because of its location, and because it opened less than two years ago. The shop is located on Manville Road, less than a block east of Washington Avenue.

“I think that since we are in an odd location, many people who live in and around Pleasantville don’t know we are there,” said Abby Bonds, an employee who is also attending Pace University.

“We usually get the same families in every week, and the occasional familiar student. There isn’t an always wide variety of customers.”

Bonds also suggested that the relative newness of the Blue Walrus has contributed to less business.

“We have only been opened for roughly a year and a half, so not many people know of us, and usually choose to go to Cold Stone.”

Cold Stone Creamery is around the corner from Blue Walrus on Washington Avenue.

“We have actually gotten people to come in and eat their ice cream from Cold Stone right in front of us, and it’s—c’mon, really? It does feel kind of irritating.”

Despite this, Bonds said she enjoys working at Blue Walrus, and gets along well with fellow co-workers.

“It is a really nice environment. The customers are super nice. I enjoy working with the other employees tremendously. I find it a much better experience to work with people than to work by yourself.”

The Blue Walrus is open every day except Monday, typically around 8 AM to 9 PM.
