Woman accused of posing as attorney in Pleasantville court

A Peekskill woman is accused of pretending to be a lawyer in Pleasantville Village Court. Charges against Delilah Torres, 42, relate to a case originally scheduled for June 26. According to the Westchester County District Attorney’s office, Torres identified herself as an attorney for a client in the case. The next day, the DA’s office said Torres provided additional documents that claimed she was an attorney.

According to the DA’s office, Torres claimed that she graduated from Columbia Law School on May 18 but had not taken the bar exam. However, there are no records that Torres had graduated from, or even attended, Columbia Law School.

“This was the first time we ever seen an attorney pretend to have all the qualifications needed for the job,” said Pleasantville Village Court Clerk Stephanie Timm-Austen. She said Torres’ claims were suspicious because she did not know how to file one of the required documents. Timm-Austen said Torres and the person she claimed to represent were referred to organizations that could help with the paperwork, but “Torres kept claiming that she was an attorney.”

Torres has been charged with two counts of Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the first degree and one count of Practicing or Appearing as Attorney-at-Law Without Being Admitted and Registered.
