Coyote Meeting Rescheduled for Nov. 29

A meeting about coyote sightings in Pleasantville that was canceled due to snow on Thursday has been rescheduled. It will take place on Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Clinton Street Center.

Chris Nagy, Director of Research at the Mianus River Gorge, will be the guest speaker.

Several Pleasantville residents have reported seeing coyotes in their neighborhoods this fall. On Oct. 2, Kevin Clarke, a wildlife biologist at the New York State Department of Environment Conservation, spoke in Pleasantville about the issue. Video of his talk is available on PCTV.

Clarke offered suggestions for how to keep coyotes away. “Stop feeding the pets outside,” said Clarke. “Coyotes are predators and they will take advantage of any food source they can find.” He also said coyotes are attracted to garbage left outside, and to areas with tall grass and other places they can hide.

The DEC also advises residents who encounter coyotes to take an aggressive approach: try to appear large by standing tall and holding your arms out, and make loud noises.

The village of Pleasantville asks residents who see coyotes to contact police at 914-769-1500.
