Mount Pleasant Town Board Member Considers Next Steps

Amiano, 24, is preparing for the transition off of the Town Board.

Anthony Amiano said he is not sure whether he will run again to serve on the Mount Pleasant Town Board. Amiano was appointed to the Town Board six months ago to replace Mark Rubeo, who became Town Justice. Amiano ran for a one-year spot on the board in the Nov. 6 election, but lost to Democrat Francesca Hagadus.

“I will be honest, I do not know,” he said when asked about whether he will run again in 2019 for a four-year position on the board. “I have been in public service now for almost four years, and it’s still important to me.”

Amiano said he wants to see the final election tally before making any plans. For now, he continues to serve on the Town Board, which is working to pass a 2019 budget before the end of the year.

Amiano said he enjoyed the campaign. “The best part was getting out and meeting people. Hearing their feedback,” Amiano said.

At 24 years old, Amiano is the youngest member of the Town Board. He has also served on the Valhalla Union Free School District Board of Education. Amiano offered advice to other young people who might be interested in getting involved with local government.

“First and the most important, get involved with your community with what you like,” he said. “Show people you care and do the right thing. Always stand on principle.”
