Soccer cleats, baseballs, and lacrosse sticks were among items free for the taking at a local swap event this month.
The sports swap September 13 took place at the Pleasantville Recreation Center. Residents dropped off new or gently used sports equipment beforehand, and anyone could take what they wanted the day of the event. The organization Pleasantville Recycles holds the swap every fall and spring to line up with the youth sports seasons.
Pleasantville Recycles co-chair Bridget Egan said cleats are the hottest item at the sports swap. But she also said the organization accepts a wide variety of equipment. “If you had an interest in it, there’s probably someone else who is going to have an interest in it too,” Egan said.
However, there are a few types of items Pleasantville Recycles does not accept, such as bicycles, helmets, and skis.
After each event, some leftover equipment is donated to schools and nonprofit organizations. Egan holds onto the rest until the next swap.
“Ideally, very little of it gets stored in my garage or basement,” she said.
Pleasantville Recycles runs other sustainability programs as well, such as a Halloween costume exchange and a food scrap composting service in partnership with the Pleasantville Department of Public Works. The group has also worked with village officials on environmental ordinances such as the plastic bag ban and gas-powered leaf blower restrictions.
