{"id":1372,"date":"2018-11-20T12:20:08","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T17:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pleasantvillepress.com\/?p=1372"},"modified":"2018-12-17T14:34:40","modified_gmt":"2018-12-17T19:34:40","slug":"peter-harckham-defeat-murphy-new-york-state-sentate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pleasantvillepress.com\/index.php\/2018\/11\/20\/peter-harckham-defeat-murphy-new-york-state-sentate\/","title":{"rendered":"Democrat Peter Harckham defeats incumbent Terrence Murphy in 40th District New York State Senate Race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was kind of a relief\u2026 It took a few days to finally sink in,\u201d said New York State Senator-Elect Peter Harckham as he reflected on his win in the 2018 midterm elections. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senator-Elect Harckham ran against Republican-incumbent Terrence Murphy, who has served as the Senator for New York State Senate\u2019s 40th district since 2015. The 40th district includes parts of Dutchess, Westchester, and Putnam counties. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vanessa J. Herman, Assistant Vice President of Government &amp; Community Relations at Pace University was not surprised by the Harckham win. \u201cThe polls indicated this would be a tight race and voter turnout for a midterm election was high,\u201d she said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herman said that both Harckham and Murphy spent a lot of their time meeting with the constituents of the 40th district and ran campaigns that were focused on their experience. Murphy has previously served on the Yorktown Town Board and several task forces and committees as a local councilman. Harckham has previously served as a Westchester County Legislator and in the Office of Community Renewal under the Cuomo administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the race, Murphy accused Harckham of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lohud.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2018\/11\/06\/nys-senate-district-40-election\/1890957002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sending paid protestors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to his office and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Murphy4NYSenate\/videos\/1940239512756704\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">putting cameras around<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his office to spy on residents and staff. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harckham denied using those tactics and called the accusations &#8220;very typical of the Trump-era style of politicking.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve got a thick skin, say whatever you want about me. But the voters deserve to hear the truth. Elected officials have an obligation to stick to the truth, and that\u2019s what I\u2019m going to do moving forward,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of Harckham\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/peteforny.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">election promises<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> included passing the Reproductive Health Act, which would ensure that women would have \u201clegal access to reproductive healthcare choices\u201d; the Red Flag Bill, which would allow a judge to \u201ctemporarily remove firearms from someone ruled to be a threat to themselves or others\u201d; and the Child Victims Act, which would \u201cextend the statute of limitations so that victims can hold their abuser, and the institutions that enabled them, accountable in a court of law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He remains confident that it will get done. \u201cThese are things that the assembly has passed that the prior Republican leadership in the Senate has blocked.
