A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2019\/s1100\">law<\/a> passed earlier this year allows pre-registration as of January 1. Teens who register early will automatically be eligible to vote once they turn 18.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A teen who decides to pre-register, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/research\/elections-and-campaigns\/preregistration-for-young-voters.aspx\">according to the National Conference of State Legislatures<\/a>, will fill out an application and then be added to a voter registration list with a \u201cpending\u201d status until they reach 18. <a href=\"https:\/\/lwvnyonline.org\/advocacy\/vote\/2019\/LWVNYS-Other-Election-Reforms-Passed-by-Legislature-2019.pdf\">The League of Women Voters of New York<\/a> said it will soon launch a program to inform students about the law and help them pre-register.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rosie Labriola, a 17-year-old student at Pace University is in support of the pre-registration law and looks forward to becoming a registered voter.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI feel that pre-registration would be a great thing for New York to adopt because I am 17 years old and have a late birthday in the year,\u201d said Labriola. \u201cBecause of this, I am not able to register to vote for some local elections because I won\u2019t turn 18 in time and it upsets me because all of my peers are able to vote when I cannot.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another 17-year-old, Madison Marini, also supports the new law.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think pre-registration is a great idea because it gets us younger people involved in politics and it\u2019ll encourage us to research and prepare for voting when we are old enough to do so,\u201d Marini said. \u201cI would pre-register to vote because it is one less thing I\u2019ll have to do when I\u2019m 18 and it would give us a sense of involvement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"twitter-share\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?via=pvillepressny\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vote pre-registration will soon be available for 16 and 17-year-olds in New York.
