For 19 years, the Pleasantville Music Festival has been a hallmark of summer festivities in the village — a day of live music, food, and a sense of community pride. Now, questions about its future loom large, following disappointing ticket sales last summer.

The Village Board has held multiple work sessions this fall to consider whether the festival should continue following last summer’s losses totaling over $100,000. The Examiner News reports that the Board may vote this month on whether to fund the festival one last time.

Mayor Peter Scherer described the 2025 festival as a success in terms of its spirit, even if the numbers didn’t reflect that achievement. “The great news is, I think it was a great day,” he said on the podcast Local Matters Westchester in July. “We had good weather, which we hadn’t had the last couple of years, and the day ran extremely smoothly. No real hiccups. Everybody had a great time.”

But he recognized the event fell short of its ticket sale targets. “We hoped to sell 2,500 to 3,000 tickets. We ended up below 2,000.”

Scherer noted at an October Village Board work session that one challenge has been the recent emergence of music festivals in Sleepy Hollow and Croton-on Hudson, which take place in June. Having that many festivals so close together may be “too much, too soon, too fast,” he said.

Organizers of the festival noted financial challenges last summer related to escalating production expenses and last-minute cancellations by some musical acts.

Scherer characterized the challenge as a delicate balance between risk and reward. He noted that while more prominent headliners have the potential to draw larger audiences, they also come with significant financial guarantees, even when faced with unfavorable weather conditions.

Even in the face of setbacks, Scherer expressed admiration for the volunteers who bring the event to life, highlighting it as a true representation of Pleasantville’s vibrant spirit. “I don’t think there is any other community taking on such a huge venture and pulling it off as smoothly as we do,” he said.
